Our history
Windscale Rifle Club was established in the 1950s by a small group of around ten shooting enthusiasts based at the Windscale site, now known as Sellafield. The club originally used land near the Calder Hall area for target shooting.
Our journey to Drigg
As construction of Calder Hall progressed, the club was required to vacate its original range, leaving members without a suitable place to shoot. After an 18-month search for new premises, a former joiner's workshop at the old Royal Ordnance Factory in Drigg—now part of Nuclear Waste Services (NWS)—was identified as a new home. The club moved into the building in late 1959, where it remains today.
Six decades of dedication
For more than six decades, Windscale Rifle Club has proudly operated from its current range. Throughout its history, the club has overcome many challenges while continuing to provide a safe, welcoming, and well-maintained environment for target shooting. Today, the club is managed by a dedicated committee of volunteers who work on behalf of the members.
The future....
The clubs future in its current range facility at Drigg is coming to a close with the expectation of a new range facility being built at High Ling Bank, Gosforth, Cumbria.
This is in the very early stages of planning permission but the club is hopeful that permission is approved.
